Thesis defense questions by field

DIRECT ANSWER
Defense questions usually test coherence, methodological decisions, evidence, limitations and contribution. Practice answers connecting the problem, objectives, method and results. Risks differ by field: validity and ethics in health; assumptions and feasibility in business; architecture and testing in engineering; context and learning in education; doctrine and sources in law.
A question bank is for practicing reasoning, not memorizing answers. A committee may phrase questions differently or probe a decision that is not well documented.
Questions for almost any thesis
- What specific problem did you study, and why does it deserve attention?
- How does each objective connect to a reported result?
- Why was the selected method appropriate, and what alternative did you reject?
- How did you select cases, participants, documents or data?
- What did you do to reduce bias and measurement error?
- What is the main finding, and which evidence supports it?
- What can you not conclude from your data?
- What would you change if you repeated the study?
- What is the practical or academic contribution?
- How did you address permission, consent and confidentiality?
Health
- Does the outcome definition match clinical or epidemiological literature?
- How did you address confounding, selection and measurement?
- What does sample size imply for precision or power?
- Which ethics review and consent process applied?
- Do you distinguish association from causation?
Do not turn statistical significance into clinical importance without explaining effect size, precision and context.
Business, management and economics
- How did you measure the financial, market or organizational indicator?
- Which assumptions support the forecast or scenario?
- Is the proposal feasible under a less favorable scenario?
- What decision could an organization make from the results?
- How do you avoid generalizing from one company or convenience sample?
Engineering and technology
- Which functional or quality requirement does each component solve?
- Why did you choose that architecture, platform or algorithm?
- How did you test functionality, performance, security and accessibility?
- What are the prototype's limits, and what remains for production?
- Can another person reproduce installation and tests?
A demonstration is not the same as test evidence. Bring results, failed cases and acceptance criteria.
Education
- How does the intervention connect to the intended learning outcome?
- What role did classroom, institution or community context play?
- How do you distinguish actual change from familiarity with the measure?
- What adaptations would another group require?
- How did teachers, students or families participate?
Law
- What is the legal problem, and which interpretation method did you use?
- How did you order constitutional, statutory, regulatory, case-law and scholarly sources?
- Was the source in force during the studied period?
- What is the strongest opposing argument, and how do you answer it?
- Do you distinguish what the law says from your reform proposal?
Social sciences and humanities
- How did you define central concepts without treating them as self-evident?
- What position do you take toward sources and interpretation?
- How did you reach and document sufficiency or saturation?
- Which voices or documents were excluded?
- How does your position influence the analysis?
How to rehearse
Practice three rounds: a 30-second answer, a two-minute evidence-based answer and one critical follow-up. Mark where your slides contain the sample, instrument, limitations and main result. When you do not know something, acknowledge the limit and explain how you would verify it.
